Elements of Nonfiction Scavenger Hunt Description
The "Elements of Nonfiction Scavenger Hunt" is an educational activity designed to engage students in the exploration and analysis of nonfiction texts. The primary goal of this strategy is to guide students as they review nonfiction texts and discover a purpose for their reading. It serves as a foundation for teaching students what "good readers do" when approaching nonfiction texts and encourages them to go beyond passive reading and become active and critical readers. This strategy is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of nonfiction texts across various academic disciplines. Whether it's science, history, literature, or any other subject, the elements of nonfiction are consistent, making this strategy a valuable tool for developing reading comprehension skills across the curriculum.

Students are tasked with identifying and recording specific elements commonly found in nonfiction texts: title, glossary, index, diagrams, captions, tables, charts, timelines etc. and record the page where they find each element. Students are required to actively search for these elements within the text and record the page number where each element is found. This process promotes close reading and engagement with the material.

This strategy is a valuable tool for educators to introduce students to the essential components of nonfiction texts and promote active reading. By engaging in this activity, students develop skills in comprehending and analyzing nonfiction materials effectively.
