Area Study Organizer Description
The Area Study Organizer helps students integrate knowledge from multiple texts and disciplines when studying a geographical or cultural region, similar to the approach scholars take in Middle Eastern and European Studies. The first page of the Area Study organizer lists cultural, geographical, political, and economic factors for students to consider as they research a geographical area. Students can write down their findings about each dimension on the second page of the organizer. The Area Study Organizer may be challenging for some students, and a teacher may want to adapt this strategy to meet the requirements of a student's individual educational plan. For example, one could change the expectations by reducing the number of questions on page one (see modified/accommodated version). This change reduces complexity without changing the overall look of the organizer or the pedagogical goals.
Teachers may also accommodate strategies by adding page numbers, sentence stems, or word banks (see modified/accommodated version). These can make an assignment more manageable and aid students in finding the necessary information without affecting the content.
